Wall Street Braces for Banking Blitz While Asian Markets Slide

October 13, 2026 2 min read

Global markets are navigating a choppy start to the week as investors pivot toward a critical stretch of corporate earnings and economic data. In the United States, stock futures showed a fragmented picture early Tuesday morning. While Dow Jones futures edged higher, Nasdaq-100 futures dipped, leaving S&P 500 futures largely flat. This hesitation comes as traders prepare for high stakes reports from financial heavyweights including JPMorgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup, and Wells Fargo, alongside healthcare giant UnitedHealth. These results are expected to serve as a bellwether for the broader economy, specifically regarding consumer health and the impact of sustained high interest rates.

Across the Pacific, the mood was significantly bleaker. South Korea’s benchmark Kospi experienced a sharp selloff, plummeting more than five percent to close below the 6,000 mark for the first time since late July. This downward trend extended to Japan’s Nikkei 225, which shed nearly two percent, reflecting widespread anxiety across Asian hubs despite some stability in Australian markets. Meanwhile, European indices opened on a slightly more positive note, though luxury giants like LVMH struggled after reporting disappointing sales growth fueled by cooling demand in China.

Beyond individual company reports, eyes are firmly fixed on the Federal Reserve and upcoming inflation prints. Treasury yields retreated slightly following a holiday break in the U.S. bond market, but volatility remains an imminent threat as September’s inflation data looms later this week. With analysts expecting significant profit growth across the S&P 500 overall, much depends on whether big tech can prove its AI monetization strategies and if energy profits remain durable enough to offset macroeconomic headwinds.
